Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?
The Flesch Reading Ease score rates text on a 0-100 scale. Higher scores mean easier reading. Scores of 60-70 are considered ideal for standard web content, while scores below 30 indicate very difficult academic or technical writing.
What grade level should I target for blog content?
Most successful blog content is written at a grade 6-8 reading level. This ensures the widest audience can read it comfortably. Even expert audiences prefer content that does not require re-reading to understand.
How are syllables counted?
The tool uses a standard heuristic: count vowel groups (a, e, i, o, u, y) in each word, subtract one for a silent trailing 'e', and enforce a minimum of one syllable per word. This matches most readability research methods.
What is the Gunning Fog Index?
The Gunning Fog Index estimates the years of formal education needed to understand a text on first reading. A fog index of 12 requires a high school senior reading level. For web content, aim for a fog index under 10.
Why does sentence length matter for readability?
Long sentences increase cognitive load and make text harder to follow. Research shows sentences over 25 words are significantly harder to read. Mixing short and medium sentences keeps readers engaged and improves comprehension.
